Joel Stucki, percussionist
Joel Stucki is a percussionist with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and an active freelancer in the Chicago area. He has also appeared with the Grant Park Symphony, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Elgin Symphony, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the National Repertory Orchestra. Joel has worked under some of the world's leading conductors, including Pierre Boulez, Alan Gilbert, James Conlon, David Zinman, and Jane Glover. In addition to classical pursuits, he has performed in many area bars, clubs, festivals, and coffee houses with the rock bands Julie Roys and Undone and Orion Pax.
Mr. Stucki received his Master's Degree in Percussion from the Chicago College of Performing Arts in 2004, where he studied with Edward Harrison of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra. While at CCPA, Joel frequently worked with the composition department on new music and the development of innovative writing for percussion. After graduating, he was invited to teach the percussion methods class for music education majors at the school.
From 1994-99, Joel attended the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in performance. While there, he studied with Frank Epstein and Will Hudgins of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During the summers of 1996-7 and 2000, he was invited to attend the Aspen Music Festival, where he played alongside members of the St. Louis and Dallas Symphony Orchestras, as well as Jonathan Haas, renowned tympani soloist. Also while attending NEC, Joel was the Principal Percussionist for the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, and performed with the Boston Civic Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic. Joel has also been instructed by members of the Chicago Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Joel has been teaching privately since 1992. Several of his younger students have participated in area youth orchestras and have been selected for IMEA All-State Festivals. He served on the faculty of Trinity College of Music from 2000-2002.
Mr. Stucki can be heard performing the solo snare drum part of Bernard Rands' Ceremonial for Symphonic Wind Band with the NEC Wind Ensemble, recorded on the Albany Label in 1998. He also played vibraphone on Encounters IX by William Kraft, on the CD entitled Vintage Renaissance and Beyond released in 2005.
